upon charles the great's death, his son and successor-louis the pious, ever suspicious and paranoid of being overthrown imprisoned the bishop of orléans
[it has been told (clichtoveus) that later, louis, whelmed with regret, released theodulf after hearing, in his cell, the bishop's worship and chanting of the hymn. though a moving tale, it is most likely an apocryphal one]
